Equity as an essential principle of a green economy
According to Angela Cropper, Senior Adviser to the Executive Director of UNEP, the objective of sustainable development should be equity, intergenerational equity but also equity within generations, equity at the national level but also between countries.

Trade unions welcomed the mention of equity in the preparation process towards Rio+20 but regretted that wealth redistribution and decent work, which are crucial to achieve equity, were not addressed by Ms Cropper.

Sheng Fulai, the head of research in the economics and trade branch of UNEP, mentioned that social equity, poverty and the reduction of environmental risks and pressure were all part of the Green Economy and that other issues also needed to be addressed such as employment, youth, training, etc.

The meeting concluded with an information-sharing session on civil society organisations activities in preparation for Rio+20. The ITUC has already undertaken the Madrid Dialogue and is planning to take it further.
