Accommodation levels in Rio de Janeiro are anticipated to be at full occupancy during the conference. While it is not the responsibility of the United Nations to procure accommodation for the media, it should be noted that the Brazilian national organizing committee for Rio+20 has committed to blocking a minimum of 500 hotel rooms in Rio de Janeiro for media covering the conference. First Workshop of Japanese National Preparatory Committee for Rio +20
First workshop of Japanese National Preparatory Committee for Rio +20 was held on September 1, 2011. The purpose of the workshop was to collect a wide range of opinions from various Japanese stakeholders, particularly those from the 9 major groups mentioned in Agenda 21.
The workshop was started with co-Chairs? opening remarks and message of His Excellency Mr. Marcos Bezerra Abbott Galv„o, Ambassador of Brazil to Japan. In the morning session, stakeholders made presentations to share their views on sustainable development. In the afternoon stakeholder dialogues and working sessions on three themes ((a) General issues regarding sustainable development, (b) Green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and (c) Institutional framework for sustainable development) were organized , facilitated by Dr. Kazuhiko Takeuchi (Vice Rector of United Nations University), Takejiro Sueyoshi (Senior Advisor to UNEP FI) and Dr. Norichika Kanie (Associate Professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology) respectively.
About 200 people attended the workshop and exchanged their views on sustainable development. Japanese National Preparatory Committee for Rio +20 will reflect those opinions on the input to be submitted to the Rio+20 Secretariat. Next workshop is scheduled to be held in early October.
