The U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development submits the following statements:

Education for sustainable development is a crucial component for the development of a sustainable and green economy and should be explicitly addressed. Essential outcomes should include:

1)structures to support a multi pronged approachthat facilitates international collaboration on shifting our formal educational systems so that students and teachersat all levels of formal education learn how to be systemic thinkers and effective change agent skills to help create a sustainable future,

2) structures and processes to support resource sharing and strategy collaboration to educate the public about our sustainability challenges and possible solutions with an emphasis on two areas: building market demand for sustainable products, processes and policies, and decreasing demand for unsustainable products/processes/policies,

Through our work with over 40 national higher education associations in the U.S., national K-12 networks and business networks (e.g.www.theSeedCenter.org, www.aashe.org/dans, www.aashe.org/heasc and http://www.uspartnership.org/main/show_passage/83 ), we have learned that you cannot build a green economy unless the people working in government, businesses, and non-profits and the larger public understand our joint global green and sustainability challenges and know how to participate in solutions in their roles as family member, worker, consumer, investor and community member. Therefore, education must be addressed.

Education also has a unique and important role to play in generating and supporting the partnerships that will catalyze a green and sustainable economy. Educators can Research and identify working models and then share them with potential employers and employees so green businesses and green jobs can grow within a healthier context of sustainable development. With a growing national trend to incorporate education for sustainable development into the over 4000 higher education institutions and as well as into K-12 school systems, the U.S. education community is well positioned to and wants to both learn from others and contribute internationally to the crucial work of education for a sustainable future as a key component that needs to be explicitly addressed.
