Introduction

Access to sustainable energy is a necessary precondition to achieving many social goals: eradicating poverty, increasing food production, providing clean water, improving public health, enhancing education, creating economic opportunity, empowering women, and combating climate change. Kandeh Yumkella, Co-Chair of the Secretary-Generalís High-level Group on Sustainable Energy for All, will speak, and an expert panel moderated by Jose Maria Figueres, President of the Carbon War Room, and including Richenda Van Leeuwen of the UN Foundation and Radha Muthiah of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, will discuss ways to accelerate progress toward universal energy access by 2030.

Detailed programme

Access to sustainable energy is a necessary precondition to achieving many social goals: eradicating poverty, increasing food production, providing clean water, improving public health, enhancing education, creating economic opportunity, empowering women, and combating climate change. In short, development is not possible without energy, and sustainable development is not possible without sustainable energy.

There is already growing momentum for cleaner, more efficient, distributed energy solutions that can transform the existing system, much as mobile technology revolutionized telecommunications. Many governments and businesses are acting to speed this transition. However, more collaborative action is necessary to address the regulatory and infrastructue challenges of the energy sector and counter the continuing growth of the global population and increasing resource scarcity. A worldwide effort is required to accelerate the rate of change, given the scale of both the challenges and the opportunities.

Success can only be achieved if a broad range of stakeholders are taking action. This panel will discuss actions already in progress to meeting the Secretary General's objective of universal energy access by 2030.

Speakers will include representatives from the United Nations Foundation; the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves; Practical Action; Carbon War Room; UN-Energy and the World Health Organization.
