Science Messages for Rio+20
20 Mar 2012 - 20 Mar 2012
6:15 PM - 7:45 PM

New York

This side event will be the opportunity to explore possible convergences amongst a number of scientific initiatives which have taken place in preparations for Rio+20, and which could provide substantive inputs to the negotiation process leading to the Rio outcome.

These include:
? the five regional workshops on science and technology organized by UNESCO and ICSU to provide inputs to the intergovernmental Rio+20 Regional Preparatory Meetings;
? the discussions of UNESCO?s High Panel on Science for Development;
? the policy briefs developed by major international scientific programmes in preparation for Rio+20 and the major scientific event in 2012 ? the Planet under Pressure Conference;
? the major new scientific research initiative 'Future Earth ? Research for Global Sustainability' and its role in coordinating science for policy after Rio+20;
? building on the zero draft document in light of country and science community proposals;
? proposals submitted by countries in their contribution to the Rio+20 compilation document;
? the relevant findings of the High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability.

Contribution to UNCSD (Rio+20)
While reference is made to science and technology in the zero-draft document, the broader issue of increasing science-policy dialogue on sustainable development needs to be further refined. It is expected that this event will facilitate the necessary multi-stakeholder dialogue.
