Countries in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Seas (AIMS) region to hold Rio+20 Preparatory Meeting in Victoria, Seychelles, on 7-8 July 2011
The second SIDS sub-regional preparatory meeting for next year's United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), will be held at the ministerial level in the AIMS region in Mahé, Seychelles, on 7-8 July 2011. In addition to Ministers, other participants will include representatives from Governments in the AIMS region, the Indian Ocean Commission, UN system organizations, Commonwealth Secretariat and Major Groups. The meeting will be co-organized by the DESA SIDS Unit and the UNDP office covering Seychelles, in close cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Seychelles.

The intended topics of discussion include the overall preparatory process for the Rio + 20 Conference, the two themes of the Conference ("Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication (including "Blue Economy sub-theme," and "Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development"), how to better address implementation gaps within the context of the Conference, emerging issues and partnerships.

The meeting will feature a presentation from the Minister of Foreign Affaires, the Hon. Jean Paul Adam, on regional schemes to address SIDS vulnerabilities, and high-level discussions on the importance of raising the profile of blue economy and oceans issues in the Rio+20 process, of examining the appropriate path for ensuring a strong oceans outcome at UNCSD, and of galvanizing momentum to secure renewed political commitment for this purpose.

The AIMS meeting is the second of three Rio+20 sub-regional preparatory meetings, the first having taken place in Guyana on 20 June, and the third scheduled in Samoa on 22 July 2011. The outcomes of these meetings will feed into the Regional PrepComs for Latin America and the Caribbean, which will take place in Chile on 7-9 September, and for Asia and the Pacific, which will in the Republic of Korea on 19-20 October, as well as into the SIDS inter-regional preparatory meeting, which will take place in New York on 23 September.
