IntroductionArticle 36 of Agenda 21 reads: ?Education is critical for promoting sustainable development and improving the capacity of the people to address environment and development issues.? Therefore, education, both formal and non-formal, must play a vital role in achieving the objective and the themes set forth for the forthcoming UNCSD. However, education has not been fully tapped in our efforts for sustainable development.
Education plays an important role in virtually all thematic areas. For instance, the General Assembly adopted the UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training (A/RES/66/137) in 2011. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the UN Study on Disarmament and Non-proliferation Education.
The roundtable will bring together participants from various areas of work and examine best practices and lessons learned and generate recommendations on the role of education and learning for UNCSD and its themes.
Detailed programmeAs mentioned above, the roundtable will focus on the role of education and learning and bring together experts in various areas including human rights, disarmament, peace, women, youth as well as representatives of the Major Groups, governments, UN organizations and media to ensure the diversity of experiences and recommendations in the discussion.
The roundtable will generate recommendations on the role of education and learning in terms of policy and implementation for the themes set forth for UNCSD.
