Introduction

The Planetworkshops wish to organize a side event dedicated to the question of climate change. As a matter of fact, the fight against global warming is an essential stake to preserve our environment and our ways of life. This question is part of the main sustainable developments stakes.

In this prospect, we want to organize two debates, based on the works of the ?climate negotiations? Planetworkshops? Working Commission, which gathers a large spectrum of actors involved in sustainable development: government officials, leaders of NGOs and associations, business managers, experts, researchers, students, etc.

Detailed programme

We plan on organizing two debates within one side event :

-The first debate will be organized around the theme: ?Climate change and the emergence of a green economy turned toward poverty eradication?
Around the table, the experts invited will underline the challenges that represent climate change in terms of populations? adaptation, but also on the numerous business opportunities opened by the new economy of climate change.

-The second debate will oppose students and experts around the question ?How to reinvent the international climate negotiations system??
Starting from the observation that climate negotiations have improving with difficulties since the signing of the UNFCCC launched in 1992 in Rio, the Planetworkshops think that it is necessary to rethink the international negotiations climate on climate change. The system of negotiations as defined today does not allow fighting efficiently against global warming, as necessary consensuses are almost impossible to achieve. This is therefore essential to question the possibility of reinventing the climate negotiations system.

During these two debates, Experts, decision-makers and civil society representatives will be presenting results of their works defending their arguments and bringing proposals and recommendations to transform the existing model of climate negotiations. We will confront their respective visions and proposals in order to find new solutions.

They will highlight in a first time the several development opportunities offered by the economy of climate change and then will assess the opportunity to integrate climate international negotiations to the new global governance architecture which will be designed in Rio.

These debates and exchanges will feed participants to Rio+20 with new ideas on the two main themes of the Conference: Green economy toward poverty eradication and the transformation of the Global Environmental Governance. The conclusions of these debates will lead to concrete and public proposals, open to everyone.

Results of these debates, allowing deepening preparatory works, will then be presented in front of more than nine hundred decision makers from 70 countries during the 7th edition of the Planetworkshops? Global Conference, which will be held in Evian, France, on the 24th,25th and 26th of September 2012.
