15 Jun 2012 - 15 Jun 2012
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Athletes Park, UNEP Pavilion

With more than 50% of the world's 7 billion population now residing in urban areas, the Eye on Earth Community Sustainability and Resiliency Special Initiative is both an important and timely topic. It is recognized that there are numerous challenges in making these cities attractive to both residents and investors, including the need for public transportation, accessibility to potable water and the availability of green space. The challenge of this Special Initiative is to utilize information and technology available to improve the planning, management and quality of life in these urban areas.

This side event will introduce leading organisations who have made a significant contribution to the field of Community Sustainability and Resiliency. Each speaker will share with the Eye on Earth Community how their innovative work examples address Community Sustainability and Resiliency as a new trend and can contribute to the outcomes of Eye on Earth through this Special Initiative.

Presentations will include:
- The opportunity to recognise LEED in developing counties through a category rating for "temporary structures"
- Case Study: Estidama - The implementation of locally appropriate standards
