Achievements towards sustainable development through biodiversity conservation.

[Achievements towards sustainable development in especially areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services conserved through effectively and equitable managed, ecologically representative and well connected systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, integrated into the wider landscapes and seascapes (Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 of the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, adopted in decision X/2).]

Brief description:
The LifeWeb Initiative is a partnership platform that strengthens financing for protected areas to conserve biodiversity, secure livelihoods and address climate change, through implementation of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas.

This initiative provides a user-friendly clearing house for countries to profile their protected area financial priorities and invite international support, to facilitate funding matches, to coordinate counterpart financing among donors, and to highlight donor support. The Government of Spain has initiated a strategic partnership with UNEP to provide USD 7.7 million to support marine and terrestrial protected areas across Asia Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. UNEP was selected as the lead implementing agency given their expertise in many of the selected field sites.

The Spain-UNEP Partnership for Protected Areas in support of LifeWeb seeks to assist countries to implement the objectives of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas, and the UNEP Programme of Work to: strengthening existing protected areas; identifying and establishing new protected areas; and protecting biodiversity for long term human wellbeing and sustainable development.

The purpose of the side event in line with Rio+20 is to discuss how the LifeWeb Initiative for financing Protected Areas is helping to (i) eradicate poverty and strive for economic growth that benefits all; to (ii) commit to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to addressing emerging issues from a human development perspective while protecting the planet; to (iii) pursue the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and to (iv) strengthen the institutional framework for sustainable development.
