2 Feb 2012 - 2 Feb 2012
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi, India

Since the main objective of the Rio+20 conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, address the major gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the past summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges, this DSDS special event will focus on policy and governance issues and strategies. The themes of the presentation and deliberations are also related to the two themes of the RIO+20: (a) green economy; and (b) the institutional framework or governance in the context of sustainable development and poverty alleviation. A tentative programme is as follows;

6.00-7.00 PM Hours: Presentations by MOEF, ICIMOD and TERI
? The New Mountain Agenda: From Rio?92 to Rio+20 - by ICIMOD;
o Good governance for the conservation of the Himalayan ecosystems for sustainable development of the HKH region - MOEF/GBIHED
o Valuation of mountain ecosystem services for sustainable development and poverty reduction: TERI?s experience in valuating forest ecosystems ? TERI;
7.30-8.00 Pm: Ministers/Policy Makers? Panel Discussion and Open forum

Expected Achievement/Result
The special event will highlight why we need a new Mountain Agenda. The Chapter 13 of the Agenda 21 had more scientific elements and was weak in action and implementation aspects. This session is expected to update the audience with the national and regional strategies, policies and planned actions to ensure the critical contribution of mountain ecosystems in meeting adaptation and sustainable development goals in the Himalayan region.
