Inter-Agency Assessment of Sustainable Development 20 Years on from the Earth Summit: Progress, Gaps and Strategic Guidelines in Latin America & the Caribbean
27 Mar 2012 - 27 Mar 2012
1:15 PM - 2:45 PM

UN Headquarters, New York, North Lawn Building, Room 7

Based on an in-depth review, which includes a comprehensive and statistical analysis of the progress made and the gaps that remain in implementing global commitments on sustainable development since 1992, the event will discuss how to move towards a more sustainable and inclusive development path in Latin American and the Caribbean. The event will focus on: ways to overcome barriers, therefore mainstreaming sustainable development as a driving force in public policies; practical solutions and recommendations to promote low-carbon development; create ?green? jobs; and ensure that decision-making processes reflects the economic benefits and costs associated with the use of ecosystem services and materials. Even though the recommended guidelines are made for Latin American and Caribbean countries it is expected they will be useful for other countries as well, since much of the assessment conducted is equally applicable to
other regions of the world.

The publication ?Sustainable development 20 years on from the Earth Summit: progress, gaps and strategic guidelines in Latin America and the Caribbean? describes the progress made and the gaps that remain in implementing global commitments on sustainable development since 1992. Based on the deficiencies that persist and the challenges that continue to arise, it proposes guidelines for moving towards sustainable development. The report was prepared under the coordination of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in close collaboration with the regional offices of the following specialized agencies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system: ECLAC ? UNEP ? UNDP ? UNFPA ? FAO ? UN-Habitat ? UNESCO ? UN-Women ? UNICEF ? OHCHR ? UNAIDS ? UNCRD ? WFP ? PAHO ? UNOPS ? ILO ? UNWTO ? UNCTAD ? the Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification ? UN-Water Decade Programme on Advocacy and Communication ? ISDR
