Pakistan actively participated in the 1992 Rio Summit at Head of Government level and was amongst few countries of the world, which presented their National Conservation Strategy along with Country Report. Pakistan being chair of G-77 and China also led the negotiations process and played a key role in the formulation of Rio principles and UNFCCC, UNCBD, UNCCD Conventions.

Thereafter, Pakistan delegation led by Minister for Environment participated in 2002 Rio+10 Summit at Johannesburg, which is also known as World Summit on Sustainable development (WSSD). Pakistan presented its Country Report on the status implementation of Sustainable Development initiatives at the summit.

Since Rio+20 summit is scheduled to be held from 20-22 June 2012 at Rio, a series of meetings/consultations were held all over the country to formalize Pakistan?s case for the summit. In total 6 such consultative scenarios were conducted with a wide variety of stakeholders which led to the finalization of the National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) and Pakistan?s country report
