The meeting will in particular discuss:

? how sport in general, and the IOC and the Olympic Games in particular, have engaged to support the promotion of healthy lifestyles, human development and the advancement of the sustainable development agenda; how the Olympic Games have become an agent of change in terms of sustainability in all countries that have aspired to or have hosted the Olympic Games, including its influence on social behavior, contribution to building green economies and impact on long-term sustainability.

? the importance of sport and physical activity in society as a tool to fight non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as well as to boost the health and well being of nations globally. This will serve to illustrate the inter-linkages and mutual benefits of promoting environmental protection, social development and public health improvements.

? the broad partnership network developed in the last 20 years around sport with governments, UN institutions, and key players of civil society and the way to strengthen and enlarge this network in the future. The IOC side event will be a testimony to the need for a multi-stakeholder/multi-faceted governance and involvement to achieve meaningful and comprehensive results towards sustainable development.

In focus, the event will feature:

? the 2012 London Olympic Games and its significant sustainability efforts, which take place only a few weeks following the conference, and the 20 year anniversary of the Barcelona Games that set a precedent in showing how the Games can change the face of a city for the benefit of its community. Brazil sustainability plans for Rio which will host the Olympic Games in 2016 and the FIFA 2014 World Cup will also be highlighted.

Finally, the event will serve as:

? the official launch of the new publication of the Olympic Movement entitled ?Sustainability through Sport: Implementing the Olympic Movement?s Agenda 21?, a reference publication that will contain an integrated summary of progress made over the last 20 years in the broad area of sustainable development including environmental protection, education and socio-economic development.
