Publication launch: Weathering Uncertainty
When considering climate change, indigenous peoples and marginalized populations warrant particular attention. Impacts on their territories and communities are anticipated to be both early and severe due to their location in vulnerable environments. There is therefore a need to understand the specific vulnerabilities, adaptation capacities and longer-term aspirations of indigenous peoples and marginalized communities the world over. Indigenous and traditional knowledge contribute to this broader understanding.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its Fourth Assessment Report recognized traditional knowledge as ‘an invaluable basis for developing adaptation and natural resource management strategies in response to environmental and other forms of change.’ Despite this recognition, indigenous knowledge has remained largely outside the scope of IPCC assessments.
In order to strengthen consideration of indigenous knowledge in IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report (5AR), to be released in 2014, this publication draws the attention of Authors of the 5AR and climate policy makers to the rapidly growing scientific literature on the contributions of indigenous and traditional knowledge to understanding climate change vulnerability, resilience and adaptation. Facilitating Green Growth in Africa: Perspectives from the African Development Bank
A path of economic growth that is either compatible with or even driven by environmentally beneficial choices is important for Africa. Green growth provides such a pathway and is compatible with Africa’s priorities. Green growth does not propose exogenous limits to growth. A green economy cannot be created overnight. However, most approaches to policy transformation include certain key elements, including vision/buy-in; valuing what matters; planning for the future; sending the right signals to the private sector; and mobilizing resources. Most immediately, lack of finance remains the main impediment to the implementation of sustainable development goals and green growth in Africa. Through various initiatives, including the Green Climate Fund and the Green Facility for Africa, the AfDB is playing a role in supporting inclusive green growth in the continent. This event will focus on the need, opportunities and challenges including the means of implementation for Green Growth in Africa through a discussion platform among key stakeholders.

15th June: Women’s Resistance and Resilience - Women’s Major Group Rio+20 Side Event at Rio Centro
Social equity, gender equality and environmental justice must form the heart of sustainable development, and of the outcomes of the Rio+20 UN conference. a sustainable and equitable economic system, which ensures gender equality, human rights and environmental justice and supports sustainable livelihoods and poverty eradication.
This side event will present testimonies from women resisting extractive industries, unsustainable energy,
agro-fuels and land-grabbing attempts. The side event will also show examples of women’s initiatives towards sustainable and equitable economies followed by an interactive discussion on lessons for international cooperation and national and local action

Multistakeholder Learning towards Green Society
The production and consumption of goods and services drives economies and greatly influences society at large. To build a socially just economy and a more sustainable society, we must inevitably focus on making our consumption and production systems more sustainable as well -- sustainable not only in terms of market growth and resilience, but also in terms of productive non-market relations, ecosystem health, quality of life and the well-being of all involved.
This event, co-organized by the Education for Sustainable Development Programme at UNU-IAS and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, will explore how learning and education can lead to more sustainable systems of consumption and production and how to promote uptake of such efforts at national and international levels. The event will also help identify new, multistakeholder partnerships among local, regional and global networks that can facilitate transformative learning and action research for sustainability. Banks, Sustainable Development and Rio+20 - Addressing the Missing Link
This side event will highlight and expand on the unique and important role that the financial sector has to play in achieving sustainable development. Not just due to its ability to finance, invest in, and insure sustainable assets and activities at scale, but even more so in light of its potential to influence and align the activities of all its clients and investee companies with long-term sustainability goals.
Through the integration of sustainability issues directly into their core decision-making processes, financial institutions can fundamentally contribute to the greening of business and industry, job creation and social inclusion, thus helping society to address sustainability challenges such as social inequity, climate change, resource scarcity and biodiversity loss.
The objective of the session is to bring together the key players from and related to the banking sector to get a better understanding of the sectors role in fulfilling sustainable development, the barriers and challenges financial institutions are facing in fulfilling this role, and most impotantly: the immediate and mid to long term policy developments that can help speed up the mainstreaming process with a special focus on what Rio+20 can deliver to catalyse this process (based on UNEP FI Position Paper). There are many examples from around the world that have shown the importance of tertiary education in sustainable development efforts and the critical need for continued support for these types of initiatives.
This event, co-organized by the Education for Sustainable Development Programme at UNU-IAS in collaboration with more than 15 partner organizations and government ministries will highlight the important role of tertiary education in sustainable development and will answer the following key questions:
• How can governments, NGOs, businesses and tertiary education instigate the necessary shift towards sustainable development and the transition to a Green Economy?
• How do we unlock the potential of tertiary education sector to transform society?
• What role should tertiary education play in creating and participating in the institutional framework for sustainable development?
• What funding and support mechanisms will need to be provided to ensure the success of tertiary education in sustainable development efforts? [Read more]

Broadband and ICTs for smart, inclusive and sustainable societies
Understanding the role that information and communication technologies (ICTs) are playing in the transition to the green economy and sustainable development pathways is understanding our modern, fast moving and technology driven world. The fast evolution of ICTs and their accelerated adoption over the past decade have put ICTs at the center of todays Information Society and Digital Economy, with various applications and impact on other economic sectors and areas of activities. This strategic position combined with the dynamic greening and equalizing potential of ICTs renders them key enablers of win-win-win scenarios in the context of sustainable development strategies. Through appropriate actions and policies, they can help induce economic transformation and job creation, achieve social goals such as social justice and poverty reduction and build sustainable, smart societies, in an systematic, integrative and meaningful way.
Broadband networks are the best example of such innovative technologies. They are a unique cost-effective, environmentally friendly and inclusive instrument to spur growth, trade and employment, promote social progress and accelerate achievement of the millennium development goals (MDGs), and ensure environmental protection and a sustainable future. Thus, they should be recognized as one of the major cross-cutting drivers of sustainable development, allowing to successfully integrate all its three pillars and promoting attainment of its fundamental underlying principles of efficiency, effectiveness and equity.
Broadband networks have become a basic infrastructure of modern society just like roads, electricity or water. Broadband is deeply transforming several sectors of our economy, such as transportation, energy, manufacturing or entertainment, and introducing smart grids solutions that bring about resource efficiency and behavioral change. The online and broadband services sectors shaping technology and innovation have great greening potential in promoting dematerialization and energy efficiency. But they also assist in collecting, sharing and analyzing data on environment as well as in managing and preventing natural disasters
Above all, broadband is a platform for development promoting social progress, poverty eradication and overall human well-being. After all, it is very important to realize that broadband is not an end in itself. It is a platform of progress towards Information and Knowledge Societies that are efficient, inclusive and built on sustainability principles. Broadband is truly essential and an integral part of any sustainable development strategy. [Read more]

Access to sustainable electrification: Bridging the financial and entrepreneurial gap & Boosting the Clean Development Mechanism
Access to electrification based on renewable energy sources is at the crossroads of both major objectives, which have mobilized the United Nations for two decades ? the Millennium Development Goals (for the eradication of extreme poverty); climate change mitigation (through the development of new renewable energies).
The Copenhagen Climate Change conference and the proposed Green Climate Fund did open the path, that Cancun and Durban conferences have confirmed. Today, universal access to modern and sustainable energy is fully identified as the major condition for human, social and economic development of the poorest regions of vulnerable countries. UN Secretary General has declared 2012 to be the Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
However, investment is lagging behind the level needed to ensure fulfilment of universal access. Bridging the financial and entrepreneurial gaps needs additional and innovative resources and the mobilization of national and international investors. Besides, the Clean Development Mechanism, one of the Kyoto mechanisms has demonstrated its limits to respond to the needs of the less advanced countries.
The side event will feature exchanges on existing experiences, best practices, identification of new mechanisms, the presentation of the CDM PLUS project, etc. [Read more]

Publishing event for book
Every action towards sustainability is needed, starting from the grassroot initiatives. This book is about one of them, called Environment Online. A seed was planted by a classroom teacher at a rural school of Eno in Eastern Finland. In 12 years this virtual school and network has extended its branches to nearly 10 000 schools in 151 countries.
The book contains pedagogical and scientific articles related to sustainable lifestyle and the ENO process, written by eminent Finnish scholars in the fields of education, ethics, and forestry. It also presents concrete examples of the activities and effect of ENO in South East Asia and Brazil, and ends with environmental stories by ENO students from different parts of the world.
This seedling in my hand, I will let it grow
For those who built our land so many years ago.
We have all the keys and after centuries
If our game is fair the green gold will be there.

Knowing our Ocean, Protecting our Marine Treasures, Empowering Ocean Citizens
The ocean, our common heritage, covers over 70% of the globe?s surface. The ocean shapes the Earth?s climate and influences the distribution of ecosystems, biodiversity, and thus food availability across the globe. This single, contiguous body of water is crucial to human life. Yet, despite the scientific research promoted via international cooperation over the past 50 years, the ocean remains relatively unexplored. Moving towards sustainable development of the ocean requires strengthening global scientific efforts to fully comprehend and protect coastal and marine environmental health, to conserve biological diversity, and to mitigate the impact of ocean threats. Sound ocean management requires developing the appropriate tools and mechanism to protect ocean resources and biodiversity while sustaining livelihoods that are compatible with healthy ecosystems. Finally, the transition towards such a blue-green approach will require a shift in human behaviour which can only be instrumented through ocean education and awareness-raising leading to the emergence of a true ?ocean citizenship?.

Rio+20 Side Event
Cities play a dominant role in development as engines of social and economic
growth. They are home to over half of the worlds population and
in the coming years, this number is expected to grow by 70%. While rapid
urbanization positively contributes to development, it could also lead to
the increase in exposure to disaster risks if cities are not managed properly.
In addition, failed infrastructure, environmental degradation and challenges
posed by climate change make urban areas vulnerable to hazards. More than
half of the world?s largest cities, with populations ranging from 2 to 15 million,
are currently located in areas of high risk of seismic activities. In addition,
almost a billion of people still live in informal settlements without access to
basic services and often located in high-risk areas. Addressing these challenges
requires concerted effort and commitment from all urban actors to
reduce disaster risks and build-up resilient cities and communities which will
be explored in this side event. [Read more]

ISO International Standards and Green Economy
To promote wide-ranging dialogue about the importance of ISO International Standards as a contribution to the green economy in the context of sustainable development. This side event will provide participants with examples of how an international, consensus-based, multi-stakeholder, standards-setting system can achieve global agreement on the pragmatic implementation of green economy issues at the organizational level.
As a concrete example, ISO developed an International Standard that provides guidance on social responsibility – ISO 26000 – in 2010. It involved more than 450 par¬ticipating experts, from 99 countries, and 42 organiza¬tions in liaison. These experts came from six specifically identified stakeholder categories: government, industry, labour, consumers, NGOs and academia. Its main topics are organizational governance, human rights, labour practices, the environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development.

UN Multi-stakeholder Strategies for Scaling-up and Mainstreaming Sustainable Development
In order to achieve a green economy, green society, and a world fit for children, a radical transformation in our policies, technologies, patterns of production and consumption, and our foci of innovation is required. A wide range of sustainable development strategies have emerged, led by UN agencies, international and national organizations as well as civil society. These practices have demonstrated their potential to engage and empower even the most vulnerable and marginalized communities equipping them with values, skills and knowledge to thrive and contribute towards a green society. Yet, while there is evident success of these transformative practices, they often retain a status of “good examples” and are seldom up-scaled and mainstreamed to become a core strategy for a green economy.
This event, organized by the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Programme at UNU-IAS in partnership with UNICEF, UNDP and UNESCO, will explore multi-stakeholder partnerships and strategies that enable the implementation and concretization of sustainable development in areas such as urban planning, education, disaster risk reduction, innovation, research and more. It will also show that, in order to upscale sustainability practices at all levels, new and innovative forms of education and capacity development are required. The ESD Programme at UNU-IAS will place a particular emphasis on the ways in which its initiatives have created more effective information and knowledge generation and sharing on sustainable development, as well as showcasing case studies on learning as a transformative tool towards sustainability. Agriculture the way towards sustainability and inclusiveness
In order to feed 2 billion more people by 2050, and as climate change contributes to depleting land and water resources, we will have to produce more food with fewer resources. Sustainable agriculture will help us to face todays challenges, both in Europe and in the world as a whole.
The European Commission is organising a joint high-level side event at the Rio Summit of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. This side event will outline the important role that sustainable agricultural practices and supporting policies can play in order to reduce poverty, hunger and malnutrition, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection, and thereby contribute to sustainable development.
The EU Common Agricultural Policy has undergone substantial changes since its early days and has become a policy that helps agriculture respond to the requirements of sustainable development. We are making our agriculture greener, so that scarce resources can be managed more effectively thanks to innovation, and ensuring the continued existence of our production base, while enhancing rural livelihoods.
Investment in sustainable and inclusive agriculture and the development of supportive policies are also at the core of EU development policy. Sustainable agriculture is key for poverty reduction and food and nutrition security and long-term and inclusive growth, especially in developing countries, due to its strong multiplier impact on other sectors.
This side event will also provide an opportunity for prominent speakers to share experiences and visions from Brazil and the African Union. In order to showcase best practices, closing speeches by high-level representatives of key farmers' organisations will present their views and on-the-ground experiences regarding sustainable and organic agriculture.

Decisions we need for the city of 2030 - ICLEI side event
In 2050, about 9 billion people will live on this planet ? how can we ensure at least basic, decent livelihoods for all with more equity and social justice when current trends indicate that by 2030 climatic changes will have taken effect, scarcity will have led to significant price increases in water, food, mineral oil, natural gas, and many materials? ICLEI?s vision is not to merely look at the status quo and make incremental improvements to it, but rather to consider the systemic changes we need to make now in order to ensure sustained human life on earth. Within this approach, the side event will consider specifically how we must design our cities now in order to create a sustainable urban future. Which decisions have to be taken now and by whom in order to create a sustainable city by 2030?

Women at the Frontline of Sustainable Mountain Development
Two decades after the first, ground-breaking Rio Summit, many mountain women continue to be economically poor and disadvantaged in terms of access to natural and development resources and power relations. Although some mountain countries have made gains in womens economic power, many have made less progress in the implementation of policies, allocation of resources, and political will needed to make a difference to marginalized rural women. Womens economic and social empowerment is rarely a central goal in the renewed attention to sustainable development and the emerging global debate on green economy and climate change. Yet women have valuable knowledge and experience in adapting to multiple drivers of change including climate change, globalization, economic policies, out-migration, and land use change in mountain contexts. People in the mountains, particularly women, experience these changes differently and disproportionately because of socially constructed gender relations and the environmental fragility of mountain contexts.
This event provides an opportunity to share the voices and experiences of normally excluded but critically important actors of sustainable mountain development, and offers a global platform for dialogue and discussion among policy and decision makers, researchers, women leaders, and gender advocates. The event is expected to have both cross-regional impact and global significance. It is part of ICIMODs commitment to improve the livelihoods and wellbeing of mountain women, men, and children in the greater Himalayan region, and is a lead-up to the international Bhutan+10 conference on gender and sustainable mountain development to be held in October 2012 (see overleaf).
