Achievement of Commitment
All countries would have set relevant national targets for nutrient loadings, marine litter reduction and wastewater discharges . The planning of strategies for achieving these targets would have been commenced, through processes such as Regional Seas Action Plans and through functioning Global Partnerships on Marine Litter, Nutrients, and Wastewater Management.
How this will be achieved
Establish a Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML) which will increase awareness of the impacts of marine litter issues, share information, strengthen global and regional networks/nodes, undertake relevant activities in a coordinated manner, and utilize resources efficiently, while identifying economic development and job creation opportunities.
Establish a Global Partnership on Wastewater Management (GPWWM) to promote with partners a network of experts, institutions and Governments, including from the private sector, along with a supportive online information to facilitate the sharing of lessons learned, good practices and available and acceptable technologies between Governments and other stakeholders in relation to improved wastewater management.
UNEP will continue to support the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM), which focuses on strategic, global advocacy to trigger discussions among governments and stakeholders to reach consensus in moving towards lower nitrogen and phosphorous inputs to human activities. The GPNM will provide a platform for governments, UN agencies, scientists, industry and civil society organizations to forge a common agenda, mainstreaming best practices and integrated assessments, so that policy making and investments are effectively ‘nutrient proofed’.
