Achievement of Commitment
Following the DESD designed to:
- Deepen awareness of environment issues
- Shift our modes of living toward sustainability
- Empower to take concrete actions
We aim at an endorsement of marine education by governments and international organizations through the integration of marine matters in education curricula and activities.
Efforts in formal and informal learning will be assessed and guidelines for the implementation of marine education will be produced.
A worldwide network of organizations will promote marine education and propose resources, in the overall ESD framework, so as to support the Rio+20 Ocean decisions and solutions to other marine challenges
How this will be achieved
We shall build on success in France and Japan, where National Education Ministries already discuss the development of ocean curricula in parallel to the definition and implementation of national ocean policies. An exchange of information and expertise between different actors in the field has already started.
We shall assess efforts in marine formal and informal learning. The assessment will lead to sharing best practices and developing the guidelines for the implementation and promotion of marine education activities. The process will be carried out first in Europe and East Asia and then worldwide.
A network of organizations will promote marine education in the formal and informal learning and propose appropriate resources to interested parties worldwide in the overall framework of Education for Sustainable Development.
Specific meetings will be held during the ocean related events : Oceans Day at Rio+20 (2012), East Asian Seas Congress (2012), 9th International Aquarium Congress (2012), 1st European Conference on Ocean Literacy (2012), 2013 International Marine Protected Areas Congress, ESD Conference in Japan (2014), WON International Meeting (2014), Sea for Society Ocean Conference (2015)
They will allow the exchange of data and experience and relevant partner mobilization. The information gathered will be conveyed to relevant authorities.
