This side event will present the UNEP report on food security titled: �Avoiding Future Famines: Strengthening the Ecological Basis of Food Security through Sustainable Food Systems�.

The report, which was prepared in collaboration with other stakeholders including IFAD, FAO, WFP, WRI and the World Bank, has an objective of summarizing to policymakers and other stakeholders two important points:
1. The importance of the ecological basis of the food production system -- agriculture, marine fisheries, inland fisheries -- and how we are undermining this basis through land degradation, competition for land, overfishing, pollution, among other factors.
2. The solutions through "sustainable food systems". This includes a wide range of approaches from multi-use landscape management to minimizing waste and improving the efficiency of the food chain.
